Project 4: Milestone 1

This homework is worth 168 points.

It should be done as a team.

P4 is due on Gradescope on Monday, November 2, 11:00am ET.

Learning Goals

  • Work together as a team, dividing up responsibility for user stories amongst the team members.
  • Meet with your partner organization to communicate progress through demos of your work and asking questions to ensure what you build is what they want.

Project type-specific Learning Goals:

  • Evaluate the accessibility of your partner organization's products.
  • Run a co-design workshop to learn about the needs and aspirations of your target population.
  • Pilot test the application you are developing to ensure it comes along as expected.

Project Context

Now that your team has created a specification for its goals, this milestone will propel you forward towards your intermediate goals.

We expect you to meet at least once with your instructors to share plans and once with your partner organization to share results of this milestone. One of your deliverables for this milestone are the notes from these meetings.

Another deliverable for this milestone is the set of notes you take during your team meetings.

Overview

See Project Overview for a description of the entire lifecycle of each kind of project.

Accessibility Evaluation Projects

If you are conducting an accessibility evaluation, your goal for this milestone is to evaluate the existing application or web site with at least 5 people who have the target disability. You may ask your partner organization for assistance in recruiting these 5 people.

As per the IRB protocol you submitted with the last assignment, you must prepare recruitment flyers, consent forms, questionnaires, and evaluations. If you have not turned these in yet, you must run them by your TA for approval prior to engaging with any of your study participants. Before you run each participant, be sure to have them sign your consent form.

Your deliverable for this portion of the project is all of the transcripts, notes, and analysis you create after evaluating the application or web site with your participants.

We note that these requirements are deliberately vague, to give your team the latitude it requires to customize the accessibility evaluation for the needs of the application or web site and your partner organization. You must demonstrate that your evaluation builds on everything you have learned so far in this class (and should it require, go beyond as well).

Design Vision Projects

In this milestone, you will plan and run a 2-hour co-design workshop with at least 2 people with your target disability. You may ask your partner organization for assistance in recruiting them. Reach out to the instructors if the partner organization fails to help.

Run a focus group-style meeting with your workshop attendees, divided into two phases: requirements gathering and brainstorming. If attendees are willing, please audio and video record the workshop.

Requirements gathering (45 minutes): Start by administering the consent forms and having the attendees sign them. Start by explaining your project idea and its goals. Ask your attendees questions about their experiences with the topic of your project. Have them tell you stories about the successes and pain points they've experienced.

Break (15 minutes): Give your attendees a 15-minute break. While they're away, quickly sketch out some ideas with your team.

Brainstorming (60 minutes): Bring your attendees back in and ask them how they would like to see the pain points addressed and problems solved in the hypothetical future world that you are designing for. Let them come up with their own ideas and augment them with your own. Be creative here to support many kinds of contribution types. Have them speak out loud, sketch pictures, act out scenarios, write on PostIt notes, do some cart sorting, etc. Use whatever techniques you've learned so far in your HCI classes at CMU to engage with the attendees and learn everything you can.

As per the IRB protocol you submitted with the previous assignment, you must prepare recruitment flyers, consent forms, and your co-design protocol. If you have not received a grade for these yet, you must run them by the instructors for approval prior to engaging with any of your co-design participants.

After the workshop, analyze the data you've gathered into fleshed-out, multimedia (text, graphics, videos, etc) descriptions of lived experiences, pain points, and future aspirations.

Note

Be careful about using GenAI to help you analyze the data. Without careful prompting, GenAI tends to eliminate the rich detail that will lead you to the most creative ideas. I believe you will come up with the best ideas all on your own.

Your deliverable for this portion of the project is all of the transcripts, notes, copies of the raw materials created by your attendees, and the analysis you created after running your co-design workshop.

We note that these requirements are deliberately vague, to give your team the latitude it requires to customize the co-design workshop for the needs of your project and partner organization. You must demonstrate that your analysis builds on everything you have learned so far in this class (and should it require, go beyond as well).

Application Solution Projects

In this milestone, you will begin building your application according to the user stories you have submitted in the previous assignment. You may change these user stories at any time, but we expect to see any and all changes documented in your project management system. In addition, all code must be checked into your GitHub repository. There must be work items that document your progress as well as designs on tools like Canva or Figma that reflect what your team intends to build.

By the end of this milestone, you will pilot test the application (as much as you have built) with one other person in the class who is not on your team. You should document the pilot test through recordings, transcripts, and analysis of how it went and lessons learned. You must document changes to any user stories that were inspired by the results of the pilot.

Your deliverables for this milestone are the transcripts and analysis of the pilot study. In addition, we require you to record a demonstration of the implemented user stories (this can be done by anyone on your team), upload it to YouTube (keep it unlisted) and turn in the URL to the video.

Deliverables

  1. Notes from the meeting with your instructors.
  2. Notes from the meeting with your partner organization.
  3. Notes from your team meetings.
  4. Artifacts created
    1. For accessibility evaluation projects, any materials for the IRB protocol that were not created or turned in for the previous assignment and all of the transcripts (if available), notes, and analysis you create after evaluating the application or web site.
    2. For design vision projects, the transcripts (if available), notes, copies of raw materials, and the vision ideas and analyses you create after running your co-design workshop.
    3. For application solution projects, the transcripts (if available), notes, and analysis of the pilot study as well as a URL of the video demonstrating implemented user stories.

To receive full credit, we expect that all deliverables listed above are included in a single, merged PDF document submitted to Gradescope.
