Project 5: Milestone 2¶
This homework is worth 168 points.
It should be done as a team.
P5 is due on Gradescope on Monday, November 16, 11:00am ET.
Learning Goals¶
- Work together as a team, dividing up responsibility for user stories amongst the team members.
- Meet with your partner organization to communicate progress through demos of your work and asking questions to ensure what you build is what they want.
Project type-specific Learning Goals:¶
- Redesign your partner organization's products to improve their accessibility.
- Create a draft wireframe for your video and get feedback on the vision it proposes.
- Evaluate the application you are developing to ensure it works as expected.
Project Context¶
Your team has begun implementing user stories towards an accessibility evaluation, a design vision, or an application solution.
We expect you to meet at least once with your instructors to share plans and once with your partner organization to share results of this milestone. One of your deliverables for this milestone are the notes from these meetings.
Another deliverable for this milestone is the set of notes you take during your team meetings.
Accessibility Evaluation Projects¶
If you are conducting an accessibility evaluation, your goal for this milestone is to design and implement the changes to your organization's existing application or web site to improve its accessibility. We require you to record a demonstration of any user stories implemented for the redesign (this can be done by anyone on your team), upload it to YouTube (keep it unlisted) and turn in the URL to the video.
You must evaluate the accessibility of your work with at least one other person in this class who is not on your team. You must turn in all of the transcripts, notes, and analysis you create after evaluating the redesign of the application or web site with your participant.
Design Vision Projects¶
In this milestone, you will begin designing your future vision of this accessibility technology. Collect all of your analyses and ideas from P4 and turn them into low-fi scripts, sketches, and storyboards for the 3-minute video you are creating.
You have full creative freedom on the length and content of your scenes. In an envisioning video, you want to show what your vision is, not just talk about it out loud. Create characters with spoken dialogue who live through the future you envision. Using Courier 12-point font, your draft script should be about 3 pages long. This conforms to the TV industry standard of one minute of screen time per page.
Put all of your materials into Canva, Figma, or other creative cloud tools of your choice. Share these with the course instructors.
Record a low-fi, table-read version of your video. In HCI, this is similar to bodystorming. Act out the scenes (from your seat at the table) with paper props. Overlay a spoken narration. Don't spend any time on choreography, blocking, costumes, scenery, graphics, technology, or anything that would take effort. The goal in this milestone isn't to produce a slick video; it's to show the gist of the story you want to tell. Upload your video to YouTube and mark it as unlisted.
Before finalizing the concept, you must show your low-fi video to 2 people with the target disability to obtain their feedback. These may be the same people you invited to your workshop in P4. Do they like the idea? Do they resonate with the characters? Do they want this future to come to pass? Ask what they'd like you to change or improve to better realize their vision. If they consent, audio and video record the interviews. Be sure to take notes as well.
As per the IRB protocol you submitted with P3, you must prepare recruitment flyers, consent forms, and questionnaires. If these interviewees were not in your co-design workshops, be sure to have them fill out and sign consent forms.
For your deliverables, turn in your scripts, sketches, storyboards, Canva, Figma, and/or creative cloud document URLs, YouTube video URL, interview notes, and interview transcripts.
Application Solution Projects¶
In this milestone, you will continue working on the user stories to implement your application. As before, you may change these user stories at any time, but we expect to see any and all changes documented in your project management system. In addition, all code must be checked into your GitHub repository. There must be work items that document your progress as well as designs on tools like Canva or Figma that reflect what your team is building.
By the end of this milestone, you will evaluate it with at least one person with the target disability. You may ask your partner organization for assistance in recruiting this person.
As per the IRB protocol you submitted with the last assignment, you must prepare recruitment flyers, consent forms, questionnaires, and evaluations. If you have not turned these in yet, you must run them by your TA for approval prior to engaging with any study participants.
Your deliverables for this milestone are the transcripts, notes, and analyses of the evaluation. In addition, we require you to record a demonstration of any user stories implemented since the last milestone (this can be done by anyone on your team), upload it to YouTube (keep it unlisted) and turn in the URL to the video.
